As undoubtedly one of the world’s liveliest cities, Hong Kong has no shortage of must-see highlights and Jumbo Kingdom is most definitely one of its best! Both locals and tourists alike regularly flock to this unique floating paradise to enjoy a wide range of dining and shopping experiences, and a whole lot more. Situated within Hong Kong’s Aberdeen Harbor in Aberdeen South Typhoon Shelter, the floating complex was founded in 1976 and has hosted more than 30 million guests, including notable famous names ranging from John Wayne, David Bowie and Queen Elizabeth II to Chow Yun Fat, Gwyneth Paltrow, Tom Cruise and Stephen Chow. No matter whether you live in Hong Kong or are only visiting for a few days, no visit to the city can be considered complete without a trip to visit Jumbo Kingdom.
History of Jumbo Kingdom
Jumbo Kingdom technically consists of two separate floating structures, Jumbo Floating Restaurant and Tai Pak Floating Restaurant, with the latter dating all the way back to 1957. The Jumbo Floating Restaurant originally opened its doors in 1976 after more than four years of construction and millions of dollars of investment. The complex was started by Dr. Stanley Cho, who remains the owner to this day, and was designed to mimic the look of a traditional Chinese imperial palace. The complex originally consisted of two floating tugboats, and in 2003, Jumbo Kingdom underwent a massive renovation project that transformed the complex from a floating restaurant to a theme park on the sea. As part of the renovation, the complex was expanded to include numerous additional food and dining options, cultural attractions, shopping, sightseeing and numerous other attractions.
Few attractions in Hong Kong can compare to Jumbo Kingdom in terms of the available activities and amenities. Tourists and locals looking for something to eat are absolutely spoiled with the choices—from the traditional Hong Kong-style food court that serves a wide range of more affordable options to more upscale restaurants serving Chinese fine dining, dim sum and other traditional Hong Kong dishes.
Anyone looking to relax over drinks can also enjoy a traditional Chinese tea garden and a more modern wine garden. The complex is also home to its own cooking school where tourists can learn the techniques used to create an array of mouthwatering classical Chinese cuisine from some of Jumbo Kingdom’s renowned chefs. Customers who wish to enjoy seafood are sure to enjoy the opportunity to choose their catch from the complex’s large-scale seafood tank, which takes advantage of a state-of-the-art UV sterilizing system to guarantee the highest possible quality.
Outstanding traditional food and more modern restaurants are just a few of the reasons why this incredible floating complex has remained so popular throughout the years. The views over Hong Kong are another reason why so many people continue to flock to Aberdeen Harbor, while the renowned Ferry Pier Plaza features a huge selection of shops where you can browse to find the perfect souvenirs to remember your amazing trip to Hong Kong.
After more than 40 years in business, Jumbo Kingdom remains as popular today as it has for decades. In fact, the floating complex offers even more opportunities for entertainment and excitement thanks to its extensive renovation projects. In truth, there are few, if any Hong Kong attractions that can compete with Jumbo Kingdom, which helps to explain why year after year hundreds of thousands of visitors continue to make the short trip out to Aberdeen Harbor to experience all of the wonders it has to offer. For all of these reasons, Jumbo Kingdom is definitely something that every visitor to Hong Kong needs to experience first-hand.
